Computing As We Know It

A pretty intriguing post. true, subskription models are changing n thus are the eKonomiKs behind s/w. Also to Quote

The fact that we feel compelled to regression test binaries against the entire stack of middleware, OS, and firmware versions is a massive breakage of abstraction. We write in high-level languages with reasonably clean interface (API) abstractions, but collapse the entire layered cake when we go to binaries. Put it on the list of great failures of computer science.
now, this is something i have never thought about. abstraKtion in binnaries too?!?!?!

Product Placement AwardZ

Here is the list of the Product Placement Awards 2004. nJoy(via)

  • Brandcameo's 2004 Award for Overall Product Placement: Pepsi (for being in the maX no. of top filmZ)
  • Brandcameo Lifetime Achievement Award for Product Placement: Apple (for its ubiquitous presence in a cross-section of genres including dramas to tween flicks)
  • The "E.T." Reese's Award for Achievement in Press Coverage: "I, Robot" and Audi
  • Brandcameo Award for Achievement by an Oscar Nominated Film: "Sideways"
  • The "The Coca-Cola Kid" Award for Achievement in Title: "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle"
  • The "Forrest Gump" Award for Achievement in Reverse Product Placement: "Napoleon Dynamite" (we know this story atleast. the bubba gump shrimp thingie turned frm fiKtion to reality; similarly the demand for a t-shirt featured in the movie 'Napolean dynamite' brought in huge profits for t-shirts)
  • The Photoshop Award for Achievement in Revisionism: "Spider-Man 2" (k, now this is real teKKy n Kool. what if the brand placed in ur movie exists only in one Kountry?? holla. u sell the rights to another product eXisting there n alter the scenes digitally to bring the other product. that was what was done in spideey-2, where Dr. Pepper dint have an overseas marKet. so the overseas rights were sold to Mirinda n the scenes digitally altered to replace dr. pepper with mirinda)

ViZualiZation S/W

remmember blinkX. with its state of the art search results viZualiZation component it seemed to be the first real challenge to GooGle. infact if my nueronZ donot fail me then someone frm Forbes had suggested that blinKX promised the same amount of potential that GooGle had at the time of its infancY.
nyway; that was only to remind u how much potential there is in the info viZualiZation field. i think i must start making seprate notes about such biZ oppZ. i hope someone is liZtening. so here are two more great viZ toolZ.

  • Fredrik Idestam set up business on the banks of the river Nokia in Southern Finland in 1865 and the firm started by making items such as toilet paper and rubber boots.
  • The company started to concentrate on electronics in the 1980s
  • Nokia launched its first mobile phone, the Talkman, in 1984.

gMail

i doubt any of the services among the GooGle portfolio, other than GooGle(the search Engine) are running on the REAL GooGle servers. this is what i had to do with the other day.

Updated : 09:56 hrs, 11 Feb '05
btw i must confess that there is a hint that they might be moving towards that direction. as visible frm the URL they have already implemented single sign on. so then its just a matter of time. also talking about gMail; if u need a gMail invite plZ go to isnoop.net(they have got 1.5 millioooon invites in ther spooler) and those of you that have 50 invites and know that they are laZy asses send them to gmail@isnoop.net

Answers.com

in generality there have always been 2(undoubtedly there would be a doZen more, but for the sake of the context of the topic involved, there would be 2) glasses through which one can look at any service/tool. the first is the user perspective and the second is the technical perspective. n all all fairness, if one analyZes a tool/service then one must look at the pros and cons of the service frm both angles. but Forbes aint doing that. herein u can find an article frm Forbes that takes about answers.com delivering 'the best internet innovation in years'. cummon dude, gimme a break. the services provided by them are one of its kind but they use a database centric approach, which let me tell u(which u can also confirm frm any kid on the block) is NOT a scalable solution. the holy grail approach is the hard NLP approach which(gime credit ppl) im looking into.
