There are two ways of constructing a software design: one way is to make it so
simple that there are obviously no deficiencies; the other way is to make it so
complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies. (C.A.R. Hoare)

and they are getting better. this one goes straight to my heart...
A computer language is not just a way of getting a computer to perform operations
but rather that it is a novel formal medium for expressing ideas about
methodology. Thus, programs must be written for people to read, and only incidentally
for machines to execute. (The Structure and Interpretation of Computer
Programs, H. Abelson, G. Sussman and J. Sussman, 1985.)
